About the Object
Fortum Värme built Sweden’s largest Combined Heat and Power (CHP) station based on biofuel. The biofuel generates 750 GWh electricity and 1700 GWh heat annually. The facility, which is situated in the Värta Harbour in Stockholm, is one of the largest of its kind in the world and became operational in December 2016. The project consisted of a boiler in the Värta Plant, a delivery station in the Energy Harbour and an underground tunnel for transport of the biofuel.
How have we assisted the project?
Brandskyddslaget participated in the design of the fire safety for all parts of the project, but our greatest input was focused on safe operations.
A significant part of the project has also included fire safety during the building phase as the existing facility was active throughout the construction of the new facility. As certain parts of the facility have a complicated use profile the fire gas ventilation system was designed with bespoke functions. The active suppression systems include, for example, sprinklers, water mist, a spark suppression system, CO2, Novec 1230, an explosion suppression system and water cannons. Given the complexity of the facility and fire safety systems, it was important to foster good communication and collaboration between the local first responders and other relevant authorities.

About the Object
The building of E.ON Värme’s new Heat Generation Facility in Arninge.
How have we assisted the project?
Brandskyddslaget conducted the fire engineering design and associated fire risk assessment to minimize downtime due to a fire.
We also conducted the detailed analyses for Händelö Plant concerning fire protection of existing turbines.
We have also participated in the design of new facilities or renovation of existing facilities for E.ON in Åkersberga, Norrköping, and Åbyverket.

About the Object
Igelsta Plant is adjacent to the Södertälje Channel. Both Ingesta Heat Plant and Ingesta Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant are located on the same site. This site is the second largest biofuel facility in Sweden. As the facility uses recycled waste wood as the biofuel, sulphur granulate is injected into the boiler to improve the efficiency of the combustion.
How have we assisted the project?
Brandskyddslaget has participated in the design and storage of the sulphur granulate from the perspective of fire safety.
We have developed a fire safety design report an evaluation of the suppression system and fire protection design sketches for a new extension to an existing electrical substation.

Heden Plant, Karlstad

About the Object
Heden Stage 3 (the name of the latest boiler) is the largest single investment in the history of Karlstad County. The building phase of the project was initiated in the autumn of 2012 and the facility was completed in the autumn of 2014. The aim of the project was to phase out the use of fossil oil and to increase the production of renewable electricity. In the long term, the aim was also to secure delivery of heat and improve the potential to connect additional customers to district heating.
How have we assisted the project?
Brandskyddslaget designed the fire safety, conducted numerous fire risk assessments and developed the fire protection documentation for the boiler building, the control room, the technical facilities and offices, and other industrial buildings. We also inspected the final installation, coordinated testing and secured relevant expert opinions.

Vad vi har hjälpt till med
Brandskyddslaget has participated as fire and risk consultants in conjunction with both large and small renovation of buildings and in the development and installation of new production and control equipment.
Examples of projects include:
- Replacement of the Main Electrical Substation. The project was planned together with the electricity distributor Fortum AB. The new substation was placed in the inner courtyard between two existing buildings, where the distance between buildings could be compensated for using amongst other features a sprinkler installation in one of the buildings. The substation was protected using a suppression system and pressure relief system. The actual building process was planned together with the various contractors to ensure minimal loss of operations.
- Installation of New X-ray Equipment in the L-Building. This required the rebuilding of facilities with high requirements concerning the level of safety and cleanliness.
- Improving the Efficiency of a Production Line. This was achieved by rebuilding the automatic warehouse and introducing a paternoster lift system.
- Numerous renovations of ventilation systems.
- Renovation of lecture theatres.

Operations Field at Arlanda
Read More
About the Object
When Arlanda Airport extended, the existing operations functions were moved to a new site. As a result, a totally new Operations Field was developed, making it possible to bring together operations functions that had previously been spread over a wide area.
The new Operations Field will be divided into an Airside (including all areas accessible for aeroplanes including lanes, the tarmac, and ramps) and a Landside (including parking facilities, public transport, and train stations, and access routes).
How have we assisted the project?
Brandskyddslaget is working together with Ramböll as sprinkler consultants in this project. We will develop the detailed design for 13 buildings, in total 47 000 square meters. The suppression system will be comprised of both wet and dry pipes systems.
The buildings will house different types of activities including, for example, workshops, washing facilities, garages, security control, and offices. Further, canopies will be designed to house both small and large vehicles used, for example, for snow ploughing.
At the same time, Arlanda is reviewing its water use system. We will assist them in designing new land-lines and accumulation facilities that can supply both fire posts and sprinkler systems.
